Engineers Day 2024, 15 September: National Engineer’s Day is celebrated throughout the nation to recognise the birth anniversary of M. Visvesvaraya. This occasion serves to pay tribute to the significant impact that Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya has had in the field of science and technology. In addition to India, this day is also observed in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

The Government of India officially recognized Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s birth anniversary as Engineers’ Day in 1968. Since that time, this day has been dedicated to acknowledging the efforts of engineers who have contributed and continue to contribute to the advancement of a modern India.

M. Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 into a Telugu family in Chikkaballapur, approximately 60 kilometers from Bengaluru, Karnataka. After completing his early education in his hometown, he pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Madras, later shifting his focus to obtain a diploma in civil engineering from the College of Science in Pune.

In response to a devastating flood in Hyderabad in 1908, the then Nizam sought Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s expertise to devise a drainage system to safeguard the city from future flooding. He recommended the construction of storage reservoirs and established a sewage treatment facility outside the city to mitigate pollution in the Musi River, which flows through Hyderabad.
