Union Budget 2025: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26. The union minister announced that 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs will be set up in government schools in the next five years.

The government aims to enhance the spirit of curiosity and innovation and foster a scientific temper among young minds. This project was started by the Government of India under the Atal Innovation Mission in 2016.

Atal Tinkering Lab is an initiative of the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog). The Atal Tinkering Labs have been established in schools with a vision to “cultivate one million children in India as neoteric innovators.”

The labs serve to “foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds” and help students gain skills like design thinking, adaptive learning, and more. Currently, there are over 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs across private and government schools across India.

In these labs, students get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand the concepts of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), especially through hands-on do-it-yourself mode.
