Common Counseling for Graduate Admissions: Important Details

These new regulations, called Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, or GMER-23, aim to establish a uniform counseling process for admissions to medical courses nationwide.

According to a gazette notification issued by the NMC on June 2, “Without prejudice to anything stated in the present Regulations or other NMC Regulations, there shall be common counseling for admission to graduate courses in medicine for all Medical Institutions in India based on the merit list of the NEET-UG.”

The counseling process will be conducted based on the seat matrix provided by the NMC, with the possibility of multiple rounds as deemed necessary.

The Under-Graduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) will publish guidelines for the conduct of common counselling, and the designated authority under Section 17 will carry out the counseling process in accordance with the published guidelines.

The government will appoint a designated authority for counseling and determine and notify the agency and method for all undergraduate seats.

The regulations state that no medical institute shall admit any candidate to the Graduate Medical Education (GME) course in violation of these regulations.
